Small Wedding Ideas on a Budget

Getting married needn’t cost the earth.  Sure, in an ideal world and if money were no object most brides would choose to have a large wedding with all the glitz and glamour usually only reserved for the rich and famous.

However, in reality most couples have limited funds available to get married with, especially today; right?  Therefore, small weddings are becoming increasingly popular as wedding budgets continue to be stretched.

In this article we’ll discuss some small unique wedding ideas that needn’t cost a lot of money and will practically guarantee that your wedding day is an intimate and romantic experience shared with your closest friends and family.

Small Wedding Ideas

  • Assuming you do not intend getting married in a church, the following small wedding ideas on a budget may be something you might like to consider?
  • Location wise, a picturesque Bed and Breakfast or Inn can make for a perfect small wedding idea.  You will be able to hold the wedding ceremony and reception there, whilst many dwellings will also offer grounds or gardens where a marquee can be erected.  This can be really useful if you plan on having an evening reception.
  • If you are planning a really small wedding on a budget then how about a weekend destination wedding?  You will be able to pick from island resorts, beach settings, city breaks, and as the cost will be relatively cheap your closest friends and immediate family will be able to help make your wedding day both intimate and romantic.
  • How about a wedding cruise? Setting sail on a small boat or maybe even a yacht is a small unique wedding idea that can make for a truly intimate wedding experience.  It is one that requires you to invite fewer guests to keep the costs down, but the end result will be amazing.

Small Wedding Ideas at Home

It is possible to host your wedding at home or at a friend’s house.  Obviously, space and location are the key aspects to consider here. If both these tick the right boxes then planning a wedding at home can be a great small wedding idea.  However, it is important to realize that a home wedding will often require you to hire a lot of equipment that you probably do not have at home already, and so the idea may not be as cheap as small wedding venues specifically tailored for the task.

Small Wedding Reception Ideas

  • Assuming that you will be inviting fewer guests to your wedding some of the typical wedding reception ideas that are mostly centered on dancing and entertaining may not be the right decision for you.  Listed below are a few small wedding reception ideas you may like to consider:
  • Why not have an ‘Evening Wedding Meal’ at a fancy restaurant instead?  This can be as expensive or as lavish as you like, and will largely depend on how my wedding guest you have invited to your wedding reception.  In some restaurants they will even arrange a ‘Special’ menu just for you, if you let them know well in advance of course.
  • Instead of hiring a Band or DJ to play at your small wedding reception why not enlist the services of a string quartet, or maybe even a harpist?  This can make small and intimate weddings really chic and tasteful.
  • This particular small wedding reception idea is probably my favorite and is something that can easily be achieved. The idea is that you dig out some childhood, teenage and adult (up to the point of meeting each other) photographs of the both of you, and turn them into a slideshow that you can display on a projector at the wedding reception.  There are plenty of online websites who will happily turn your pictures into a slideshow, and you can then either narrate your way through the memories or have them played back to music.

Conclusion

The above ideas are just some simple tips on how planning a small wedding needn’t be expense or in anyway  less appealing than a typical larger wedding.  Just remember to take advantage of talking and mingling with your wedding guests.  All too often couples planning large weddings say that they didn’t get enough time to talk to their guests on their special day.
